Rebated Door Pairs FAQs
Rebated door pairs are made using two single doors. During manufacture, the lip is removed from the edges of each door. Normally, there is a gap between doors. Removing the lip allows the doors to interlock. Our rebated door pairs are manufactured by UK door supplier XL Joinery and are designed to be used as internal door dividers. The doors in this collection are rebated on the meeting stile, with the right-hand door opening first.
Pre-finished doors can be painted, but the process requires a little more work than painting un-finished doors. Begin by removing any hardware from your door, including doorknobs and screws. Place a cloth or bedsheet under the door, and sand the surface. Sand in the direction of the wood, and keep going until all the finish is removed. Combine water and washing-up liquid in a bowl. Use a sponge to wipe down the door. Rinse thoroughly and dry. Prime the door, and allow the primer to dry. When the primer is completely dry, begin painting the door. Start from the top and work your way down with the brush. Apply two coats of paint, or three if needed. Allow the paint today before replacing any hardware.
Unfinished hardwood doors have a veneer of timber and must be treated prior to use to ensure longevity. They can be treated with wax, oil or varnish. We recommend using Osmo. Remove all hardware from the door prior to treatment, and ensure the surface of the door is clean. Remove any grease or dirt. Sand the door, and use a flat brush to apply the wax, oil or varnish. Allow the door to dry before use. We recommend waiting a day before replacing any hardware.
Rebated door pairs are popular for interior spaces where a wide opening is desired, such as connecting living and dining areas, or as an entrance to master bedrooms or home offices. They are also suitable for certain exterior applications.
Yes, rebated door pairs are versatile and can be used for both interior and exterior applications. When used externally, it's crucial to choose doors that are designed and treated to withstand outdoor elements.
Many manufacturers offer customization options for the design and size of rebated door pairs. This allows homeowners to tailor the doors to fit specific dimensions and match their interior or exterior design preferences.
Measure the width and height of the door opening, considering any additional space required for framing and clearance. Consult with the manufacturer or retailer for guidance on choosing the correct size for your rebated door pair.
The finish of rebated door pairs may vary. Some come pre-finished with a factory-applied coating, while others may require finishing. Check with the manufacturer or retailer to understand the finishing options available.
Rebated door pairs are typically not designed for pocket door installations. They are meant to swing open or be fixed in place as double doors. If pocket doors are desired, it's recommended to explore specific pocket door configurations.
While experienced individuals may attempt to install rebated door pairs, professional installation is recommended for ensuring proper alignment, hardware fitting, and overall functionality. Professional installers can provide guidance on achieving the best results.
