For schools, colleges and academies, the right replacement is rarely just the closest-looking door slab. A school door works as a complete system, with the door leaf, frame, hinges, door closer, lock, seals, glazing, vision panels and signage all needing to be suitable for the location and intended use. High-traffic areas such as classrooms, corridors, entrances and communal spaces can also require more durable door and hardware specifications than lower-use areas.
When replacing school doors, consider how each opening is used and what performance requirements apply. Fire-rated doors may need compatible frames, hinges, closers, intumescent seals and certified hardware, while external school entrances may require additional security, weather resistance and controlled access. Accessibility should also be considered when selecting door closers, handles and entrance systems.
Planning the school door replacement project as a complete specification rather than ordering individual components in isolation can help avoid compatibility problems and unexpected costs. It also makes it easier to coordinate installation during school holidays and return the building to normal use as quickly as possible.

Start school door replacement with the location
The first question is where the door sits within the building. A classroom door, a corridor fire door, a plant-room door and a main entrance each have very different demands.
Internal classroom doors are typically specified for frequent use, impact resistance and good acoustic control. Solid-core timber doors are a common choice because they are durable, provide a substantial feel and are available in finishes that coordinate across a school. Where natural light and visibility are required, vision panels can make supervision easier while maintaining a clear division between teaching spaces and circulation areas.
Doors to halls, dining areas, changing rooms and busy corridors may need heavier-duty construction and more resilient finishes. Consider how trolleys, classroom furniture, sports equipment and bags move through the building. A decorative finish that looks suitable in a low-traffic office can quickly show damage in a busy secondary school corridor.
External school doors have another set of priorities: weather resistance, thermal performance, controlled access and security. Aluminium or steel door sets can be appropriate for entrance points, service access and high-use exits, particularly where a more security-led solution is needed. The surrounding frame, threshold and access-control preparation should be agreed at the same time as the door, not left as an afterthought.
Fire doors: replace the complete tested assembly
Many school projects involve fire-resisting doors, particularly on escape routes, compartment walls, stair enclosures and higher-risk rooms. An FD30 door is designed to provide 30 minutes of fire resistance, while FD60 provides 60 minutes where the building design and fire strategy require it. Vision panels and fire-rated glazing
Vision panels are especially useful in schools. They improve awareness at corridor junctions, help staff observe circulation areas and reduce the risk of collisions when doors open into busy routes. However, glazing in a fire door must be part of a tested or assessed fire-door specification.
The panel size, position, glazing type, beading and seals all matter. Specify for durability, not just the purchase price
School doors are opened and closed hundreds of times each day. They are pushed with elbows, held open during room changes and occasionally struck by furniture. A lower initial price can be false economy if the surface, edges or hardware will not withstand the environment.
For demanding internal areas, look at solid or engineered cores, durable facings and well-finished lippings. Laminated, primed and factory-finished options each have a place. Factory-finished doors can save decorating time and give a consistent appearance across multiple rooms, while primed doors allow a school or contractor to apply a chosen colour scheme. The trade-off is that painted doors need a properly planned finishing process and may require more ongoing touch-up work.
Consider impact protection where damage is likely. Kick plates, mid-rail protection, edge guards and finger guards can extend service life, particularly in primary schools and areas used for deliveries. These additions should be selected to suit the door's fire rating and installation requirements where relevant.
Acoustic performance may also be worth prioritising. Classrooms next to music rooms, halls, specialist teaching spaces or busy corridors can benefit from doors with improved sound reduction. A good acoustic result relies on perimeter seals, a suitable threshold detail and correct fitting. An expensive acoustic-rated door with large gaps around it will not perform as intended.
Choose ironmongery that pupils and staff can use
Ironmongery is where everyday usability is decided. Lever handles, pull handles, panic hardware, closers, magnetic retainers and locks should be selected according to the door’s purpose, users and evacuation requirements.
For accessible circulation, handles should be easy to grip and operate. Door closers need enough control to close the door reliably, especially for fire doors, but should not make opening unnecessarily difficult for younger pupils or users with reduced mobility. Adjustable closers can be helpful, but they must be commissioned correctly rather than simply fitted and left.
On escape routes, the locking arrangement must always permit safe egress. This is particularly significant where schools use fob access, keypad entry or electronically controlled doors. Finger protection is another sensible consideration, especially in early years and primary settings. Hinge guards and rear-of-door finger protectors can reduce injury risk, but should be compatible with fire door operation and not interfere with self-closing.
Measure openings and check handing before ordering
A replacement door only fits properly when the opening has been surveyed accurately. Measure the structural opening, existing frame dimensions, wall thickness, floor level and any threshold detail. Check whether the existing frame is square, sound and suitable for reuse. In many refurbishment projects, replacing the frame with the door is the more dependable route, particularly for fire-rated locations.
Door handing also needs clear agreement. Stand on the side from which the door opens towards you and identify whether the hinges are on the left or right, then apply the supplier’s handing convention. Confirm the direction of travel, the position of nearby walls, radiator covers, lockers and circulation routes. A correctly rated door that opens the wrong way can create a costly and disruptive problem.
Allow for floor finishes as well. New carpet tiles, vinyl, entrance matting or screed work can affect the under-door gap and the threshold detail. This is critical on fire doors with smoke seals and on external doors where weather performance is required.
Plan installation around the school calendar
Holiday installation is often the preferred option, but it places pressure on surveying, manufacturing lead times, deliveries and contractor availability. Place orders early enough to allow for made-to-order finishes, fire door sets, glazing and specialist hardware. For larger programmes, a door schedule is invaluable: record each opening reference, location, dimensions, handing, fire rating, finish, glazing, ironmongery and access-control requirement.
Phasing matters too. Replacing doors in a live school may require temporary segregation, safe storage and a clear route for moving materials. Pre-assembled door sets can speed fitting, but only if openings are prepared accurately and the installation team has the relevant competence, particularly for fire-resisting assemblies.
On completion, inspect every door. Check that it opens freely, closes fully, latches where required, has consistent gaps and carries the appropriate fire-door identification.
